The Day the Earth Stood Still

2. Can you imagine a world without energy or technology? How would it be different.
It's difficult for me to imagine a world without energy or technology, because we are surrounded by them. We would live like our ancestors and it would be so different from nowadays. It has advantages and disadvantages, for example:

Disadvantages.

  •  There would'n't be any medicines, because we need technology to create them. So many people would  be able to die because of a simple cold or any other illness that today we can treat going to the doctor's.
  • There wouldn't be cars, planes, trains and other means of transport, so we couldn't travel to another country as easy as we do today. Probably we should go from one side to another by boat, by horse  (that's something i would like it, i love horses) or to go on foot.
  • There wouldn't be Internet, and it's very important. (It seems that some people couldn't live without that). So, if there's no Internet, we couldn't chat with other people around the world, well, we could do that, by sending letters, but compared to nowadays that method is so slow.
  • Also we couldn't explain some things with precision. For example, what are we made of? How is the universe? What is the Earth made of? We wouldn't have instruments to figure out that with precision. Also we wouldn't be able to travel to the Moon, or to Mars, and we wouldn't have telescopes or satellites to discover how is the universe.
  • There wouldn't be so much variety of jobs, because some of them wouldn't exist. More people would work in the same job.
  • Most of the people would be uninformed, because we wouldn't watch TV and see the news.

Advantages.
  • Pollution would decrease, because we wouldn't have factories, cars, electricity... so we wouldn't contaminate the environment. And that's the more important advantage I can see. The Earth wouldn't be in danger, the Arctic thaw wouldn't exist, because there wouldn't be the global warming.
  • Maybe we'd appreciate more the nature. Because we wouldn't have so much entertainment, TV, computers and phones wouldn't exist.
  • We would do more exercise. Nowadays we just sit down in front of the computers or in front of the TV and mostly that's all.

In conclusion I think both are not good enough. A world like nowadays in which people are addicted to the technology (computers and mobile phones basically) is not what I call ''evolution''. Technology should be just an instrument to help us, not to harm us. Or worst, to damage the Earth.
But, on the other hand, a world without technology isn't good, because thanks to the technology, the human being has been able to discover amazing things and to travel to amazing places that any other species wouldn't be able to do.
Technology is around us. We have to controlled it, before it overcomes us. We have to do a good use of it and think about create more renewable energy to help us against the global warming, because our house isn't just a place with walls of wood or cement. Our house is our planet and our planet is our life.

All those noughts.

Really, the more I think about it the more confused I am because... what would happen if someone saw me taking the briefcase? Anyways, it happened three days ago and no one has came into my house or something like that to arrest me, so probably that means that nobody realized that I was the thief, I guess.
I should have had to think about it before do it.  I don't remember that day clearly, I just know that there were so many people there. If my friend didn't tell me anything about the airport, I wouldn't be in this situation, but I can't blame him for telling me that, he was just trying to help me. What happened it's all my fault. Well, now, what I have to do is to think positive, thanks to this I've learned that I have to be careful. I'm a thief, a good one, I can't make a mistake, not anymore. Anyways, what is done is done.

My Global Issue Campaign Leaflet: Save The Arctic.

SAVE THE ARCTIC!
The problem.
For quite a few years, the Arctic thaw is one of the biggest problems that we have. In the past 30 years, we've lost most of it. It's like a duty the fact  that we have to protect it, because our lives depend on it.
The Arctic is very important because the ice reflects a large part of the solar heat to the space and in this way it keeps our planet cool.
If the Arctic dissapears, it would affect the climate change, and the sea level would increase and if this happens some of the cities we know nowadays will dissapear too, like Málaga. Spain would be the European country more damaged because of it.
It is caused principally by the global warming, which is caused by the emissions of CO2.

The solution.
The solution is not simple. It needs the help of all of us. We have to reduce our footprint, I mean we have to reduce our emissions of CO2. We also need to help to promote renewable energy (like solar energy, for example).

Can you help?
At present, Greenpeace created a campaign to save the Arctic. And if you want to help our world of this disaster, you just have to support their campaign, through which they want to declare the Arctic a global sanctuary. Another option  is to donate money! It can help too. The life of our planet depends on us.

Invent a job.

I'd call it ''waste picker'' or something like that,  and it would consist of a person who goes to a place like a school, an airpot, (places in which there are a lot of people) etc, to recycle the rubbish and to controlate that people recycle. I think it's necessary and very important, because most of people don't recycle, and it'd be great if someone is waiting for that. I meant, for the moment the world is in danger, we are deteriorating it more every day so we have to create more works for save the planet.  Because the future of the world is in our hands. Probably this work already exists, but there are not much people who do that.
It wouldn't require any qualifications. It's not necessary to speak other languages or to have experience. But obviously it is necessary to have some knowledge about recycling.
The conditions of this work aren't too good.
Being realistic, I think the salary wouldn't be too high. Maybe, between 1.000 or 2.000 euros per month.

The Danish students.

Today, at 9:30 o 'clock, my English classmates and I went to the assembly hall, because my English teacher had to do a presentation for some Danish students.
The Danish students are twenty-odd years old.
My teacher showed us a video about Málaga. But first he gave us the Danish's schedule. It has a lot of activities.
The video about Málaga was pretty good, but I think it exaggerated too much the city, . I mean, Málaga is beautiful and it has nice sights, but I don't think it is a paradise, anyway it's good to attract turists.
Then, we saw a presentation about our education system. Miguel (my English teacher) explained some things about it, for example that when we finish the secondary school we can go to ''Bachillerato'', just if we want.
After that we saw another video about the hairdressing school in IES El Palo.
And finally, Miguel chose Carmen, Sonia, Verónica and Álvaro to show them our high school, meanwhile we came back to our English class.

The Bridges of Madison County

I think she did the right thing, because she thought in her family, and what would be about them if she decides to go away with Robert. So, after that, I think she is a very good person that doesn't think only in herself. Besides, I'm pretty sure that if she had gone away with him she wouldn't be happy. Because Francesca would feel guilty about what she did to them. I mean, every day she would remember it, and probably that's something that she would never forgive herself.
If I were her, I would do the same, it's like: I want to be happy with him,  but I don't want to hurt my family and make them think that I don't care about them.
Finally, in my opinion, it's a good film that makes people think that it is not easy to wipe the slate clean.

Christmas story 4

Mario, a young drug addict, desperately needs money to pay for his daily fix. He's determined to rob a supermarket. When he goes into the shop a Christmas carol is playing on the loudspeakers. It's a carol his mother used to sing to him when he was a child. He stops for a while and suddenly he can't help starting to sob and feeling really bitter when the memories filled his mind. Rosa, one of the supermarket girls sees Mario and asks him if he is allright. Mario looks at Rosa. His right hand is in his pocket and he is still holding a knife.

(Dialogue between Mario and Rosa)

Mario says: It is only that my mother used to sing me that carol and it makes me remember her. She passed away two years ago. Thanks for asking.
Rosa looks him and she says: I'm so sorry. But don't cry. I'm sure that she is prouf of you from the heaven. And of course I know that she doesn't want to see you cry.
Mario is surprised and embarrassed right now and he asks her: You don't know me, how can you say that about me?
She smiles him. And she adds: Well, I don't know you, but I think you are a nice and sensitive person. Happy Christmas.
Mario smiles her too and says: Happy Christmas to you too. I would never forget what you've said to me. I've to go. Thanks you so much.
He looks her for the last time and leaves the shop.
Now that he is out of the shop he thinks that if his mother were here she would be embarrassed of him.
He thinks that he has to change.
He says: I don't want to live like a criminal.
Finally, he approaches to a bin and he lets fall the knife that it was in his pocket into the bin.

Christmas Story

TASK 1

1. Write a 100 summary in your own words in Spanish.

2. How much did you like the story? Explain in English please.
I like so much this story, because it shows us the true sense of Christmas. Because Christmas is not just about presents. Also it tells us that we don't need money to give a special present to the people we love.

THE FUN THEY HAD

Assignments:

 1. WRITE a 100 word summary of the story in your own words. You may decide to do it in English or Spanish. Your effort to express yourself in English will always be valued by the teacher.
This text talks about a girl and a boy of the future that find a real book. They are very surprised because the books were replaced by computers and other technologies, and they rarely see a paper book. This book is about the old schools. Margie couldn't imagine that a man could teach like their mechanical teachers. She doesn't like school, but she thinks that the old schools are better and funnier, because there were girls and boys in the same room and they could help each other with homerworks.

2. ANSWER the questions below. The more you say, the better.

a. What did Margie and Tommy find unusual about the old book?
Margie and Tommy find unusual that it always had the same words when they turn back to the page before.

b. What is school like in the year 2157 and  how different from today's schools do you think it is?
It is very different because in the year 2157 they study at home an they have a mechanical teacher nevertheless today we go to a school building with more girls and boys to learn, we use paper books yet and the teacher is a man.

c. Do you think that  the Internet and technology will one day lead to such a school as described in the story?
Of course I think that, because the technology improves very fast, and today, sometimes, we use computers in class, so, I think that they are going to replace paper books one day.

d. Where or who do you think people learn more from: school, parents, modern media, friends, reading books privately? Give reasons.
I think people learn more from school and reading books privately, because in the school we learn a lot of different things and we also learn reading books because in that way we enrich our vocabulary.

e.  What do you think are the most serious shortcomings in Spanish schools/this school and what could be done about it?
I think the most serious shortcomings in our schools is that the Internet works badly.

My ''Barrio''

My Barrio. El Palo.

I live in a small area in Malaga called El Palo. It has changed a lot over the past seventy five years.
In the past , there used to be many small cottages, some shops, carriages, fields, animals like pigs, horses and chickens and also there used to be many trees than now.
Now there a lot of block of flats, many shops, a pavement, roads. Also, now we can see a lot of cars, motorbikes, bus...etc.
People used to work in the field. And a tipycal work in the past, people used to work in the sea, fishing. Now, they work in shops (clothing store, bookshop, hairdresser, among others), restaurants, taxi driver, etc.
They used to travel by carriage, by train or by walking. They didn't have vehicles (cars, motorbikes...) so travel was more difficult. But nowadays most of the people have their own vehicle and they don't need to travel by train.
The neighbourhood, El Palo, is too different now. It is more beautifull and more comfortable, because there are many shops and it has a good transport.

The 10 Essential Rules

The 10 Essential Rules for Slowing Down and Enjoying Life More

1. Copy the text below on your blog and re-read.
  1. Do less. It’s hard to slow down when you are trying to do a million things. Instead, make the conscious choice to do less. Focus on what’s really important, what really needs to be done, and let go of the rest. Put space between tasks and appointments, so you can move through your days at a more leisurely pace.

  2. Be present. It’s not enough to just slow down — you need to actually be mindful of whatever you’re doing at the moment. That means, when you find yourself thinking about something you need to do, or something that’s already happened, or something that might happen … gently bring yourself back to the present moment. Focus on what’s going on right now. On your actions, on your environment, on others around you. This takes practice but is essential.

  3. Disconnect. Don’t always be connected. If you carry around an iPhone or Blackberry or other mobile device, shut it off. Better yet, learn to leave it behind when possible. If you work on a computer most of the day, have times when you disconnect so you can focus on other things.

4.Focus on people. Too often we spend time with friends and family, or meet with colleagues, and we’re not really there with them. We talk to them but are distracted by devices. We are there, but our minds are on things we need to do. We listen, but we’re really thinking about ourselves and what we want to say.
.
  5. Appreciate nature. Many of us are shut in our homes and offices and cars and trains most of the time, and rarely do we get the chance to go outside. And often even when people are outside, they’re talking on their cell phones. Instead, take the time to go outside and really observe nature, take a deep breath of fresh air, enjoy the serenity of water and greenery. Exercise outdoors when you can, or find other outdoor activities to enjoy such as nature walks, hiking, swimming, etc.

   6. Eat slower. Instead of cramming food down our throats as quickly as possible — leading to overeating and a lack of enjoyment of our food — learn to eat slowly. Be mindful of each bite. Appreciate the flavors and textures. Eating slowly has the double benefit of making you fuller on less food and making the food taste better. I suggest learning to eat more real food as well, with some great spices (instead of fat and salt and sugar and frying for flavor).

   7. Drive slower. Speedy driving is a pretty prevalent habit in our fast-paced world, but it’s also responsible for a lot of traffic accidents, stress, and wasted fuel. Instead, make it a habit to slow down when you drive. Appreciate your surroundings. Make it a peaceful time to contemplate your life, and the things you’re passing. Driving will be more enjoyable, and much safer. You’ll use less fuel too.

   8. Find pleasure in anything. This is related to being present, but taking it a step farther. Whatever you’re doing, be fully present … and also appreciate every aspect of it, and find the enjoyable aspects.

   9. Single-task. The opposite of multi-tasking. Focus on one thing at a time. When you feel the urge to switch to other tasks, pause, breathe, and pull yourself back.

  10. Breathe. When you find yourself speeding up and stressing out, pause, and take a deep breath. Take a couple more. Really feel the air coming into your body, and feel the stress going out. By fully focusing on each breath, you bring yourself back to the present, and slow yourself down. It’s also nice to take a deep breath or two.

2. Re-order the rules so that they reflect your preference.
1. Appreciate nature.
2. Focus on people.
3. Breathe.
4. Be present.
5. Disconnect.
6. Fin pleasure in anything.
7. Single-task.
8. Eat slower.
9. Drive slower.
10. Do less.

3. Choose the three more important in your opinion and add two or three more lines to every one explaining the good consequences of following the rule.

1. Appreciate nature. - If we appreciate more the nature, we'll be happier. When we are in contact with the nature,we feel well. There are many sports related to the nature, for example, horse riding or hiking are sports that make you feel better.

2. Focus on people. This is very important, because we need other people to be happy. And, we must listen them and try to help them if they have problems, because when we have problems we want that the other people (friends, family...) listen what we say too.

3. Breathe- Also, breathe is so important. When we have to do a lot of things and we are stressed, we need a moment to breathe and calm ourselves.

INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION

Summary of the video.

The video is talking about what is migration, about its causes, problems and opportunities.
It says that in the past, people migrates to colonize the world and it was very important for the human history, but these days  it is also a problem.
We can defined that migration is when a person or a group of people move to another country to live.

The video says why some people migrate to other country, for example because of military conquest, expulsion and the poverty. And also because of economic opportunities, new settlement areas, political freedom, etc. About two hundred sixteen million people aren't living in the country that they were born, and that's the 3% of the world population.
The most inmigrants live in the USA (most people come from Mexico), Russia and Germany. And Persian Gulf countries have more people that migrate to other countries (about a 35% of their population).

Also the video says that the citizens of the European Union are allowed to live in any European Union's member state without restrictions.
Aproximatly, 15,000 people die trying to reach Europe.
Also, there are illegall migration, that it's a problem. However, migration has positive aspects, because for example it contributes to the economic development and to the cultural diversity of the countries.

HALLOWEEN

Juan has convinced his parents to let him use the house they have in the country to spend a few days with his friends. It`s a long weekend and Juan and his friends drive to the house where they expect to spend their holidays. The day is 2 November, All Souls Day. Juan and his friend decide to do a late Halloween party so they decorate the house properly to help create the rigth atmospher. They also decide to wear their horror party costumes. Needless to say they have also bought some beer and other alcoholic drinks. It`s late in the evening, it`s getting rather cold and windy. The rain starts coming down. The party is in full swing. Suddenly the lights go off. Alicia, one of Juan`s friends suggests they can do a ouija session in the dark. They all agree with enthusiasm. They set up everything and start doing it.None of the young people at the party could have ever imagined that what had started as a fun game would turn into a nightmare they would never forget.

While they were playing at the ouija, the lights of the kitchen turned on and they heard weird sounds. They were very scared and Juan decided to go to the kitchen. The lights turn off again. When he came into the kitchen,  he saw a strange shadow sitting in a chair. Quickly, Juan turn on the lights and... there wasn't anybody. But there was a letter on the table. He read it. Juan was paralyze.
Thirty minutes later.
-¡¿Juan?! - asked Alice. Juan's friends were in the living room, they were waiting Juan, but he didn't arrive. Alice and Jennifer were very happy when they heard someone go down the stairs, because they thought that he was Juan, but...
-Wait a moment, the kitchen...the kitchen is in the first floor. - said Jennifer very scared.
They tried to turn on the lights, but it was imposible. They couldn't see anything. Suddenly, the wardrobe that there was in the living room was oppened. Jennifer and Alice approached to it. Only there was a letter. It said: << I'm here, behind you. >>. They looked back. They couldn't imagine what they were looking. They were horrified. They knew that it was the end for them.

Four years later.
People never understood what happened that night, but Alice, Jennifer and Juan never returned. A leyend says that the devil lives in that house. Some people that approached to the house says that someone is there, maybe he is waiting for the next person that come into the house. But, since what has happened, nobody dare to enter in the house.
So... are you the next?
